Bella As we recognise the growing need for awareness about autism, during National Autism Awareness Month in April Eastern Respite and Recreation celebrates one family’s achievements.

Bella is a 7 year old girl who loves to communicate and tells wonderful stories about the world around her. Bella also has autism and has difficulty finding her voice.

In December 2013, a short 5 months ago, Bella’s mum started working with Bella using a method called Rapid Prompting Method. This has helped Bella tell her story and Bella’s family now understand more about their very bright and articulate 7 year old.

Mum and Bella find many opportunities to talk using Bella’s letter boards to spell out the words. Below is a conversation between Bella and her mother in which they explore autism awareness.

Sliding at Jamberoo

Our most recent Camp was a Boys’ Weekend Away. Apartments were booked at the Kiama Terrace Apartments. This location was selected because as it is close to Jamberoo Action Park, which the boys were very keen to visit. Even though the weather wasn’t always sunny the boys still made the most of the water activities at the park.

The countdown is on for the Sun-Herald City2Surf 2014!

As in previous years, you will be able to join the masses and run (or walk) to raise funds for Eastern Respite & Recreation. The funds raised will help us support local kids, teens and adults with disabilities and their families. This will assist us to support individuals like Fayaaz, Mandy, Robbie and Peter.

What a great opportunity to do something good for your body and mind and help others at the same time!
