Eastern Respite and Recreation operates several types of Day Programs including Community Participation, Transition To Work, Life Choices and Active Ageing. These programs occur in the community as well as from two Centre based settings at Hillsdale and Rosebery.

Community Participation

The Community Participation program aims to assist young adults with a disability to develop the skills they need to increase their independence, achieve their personal goals and participate as valued and active members of the community.

Eastern Respite and Recreation offers three types of Community Participation;

  • Centre based with community access
  • Individual Community Based Options
  • Self-Managed Model

Centre based programs offer flexibility in planning so that individuals can choose to do things they like whilst experiencing the benefits a group setting provides.

Individualised programs largely operate in the community with one-to-one support and, if appropriate, in small groups on occasion.

The Self Managed Model involves individuals and families having greater control over what happens, who is involved, and when an where activities occur.

In each case, Eastern Respite & Recreation employ staff who not only care, but listen. The individual is always at the centre of what we do, and listening is our most important tool.

Transition To Work

Transition to Work (TTW) is a 2-year program that focuses on equipping young school leavers with a disability to increase their skills and confidence to the point that they become “job ready”.

TTW provides a very realistic means of introducing school leavers to the next phase of their lives through participation in a combination of structured and unstructured training as well as work experience placements. In a very practical way, the staff at Eastern Respite & Recreation offer that little bit of extra help needed before school leavers with a disability can confidently attempt paid employment.

How TTW works

To make TTW a success, Eastern Respite has developed a program that combines a number of critical success factors aimed at maximising outcomes by the end of the two-year program.

Certificate I in Employability Skills: Becoming a Worker

In 2010, Eastern Respite & Recreation partnered with a Registered Training Provider (Essentra) to deliver nationally recognised and accredited training to our TransitionTo Work participants.

The Certificate I course provides the transferable skills that are required to be successful in today’s workplace. Some of the skills learnt include; Personal presentation, communication, interview techniques, problem solving, positive self esteem, adaptability, planning, team work and OH&S.

The Certificate 1 in Employability Skills course is registered on the Centrelink Course Approval Database and course participants may qualify for the Pensioner’s Education Supplement (PES). The course registration number is 2P509.

A combination of goal setting, training, support and placement are utilised to create an individualised approach that gets results. Confidence gained in real life situations becomes a springboard to successful transitions from one stage to the next. Relationships developed with local employers mean that when someone is ready to make their move, we are too!

Finally, Eastern Respite & Recreation employ staff who not only care, but listen. The individual is always at the centre of what we do and listening is our most important tool.
